This is Grimes

Because it’s Friday. Because it’s sunny – well, at least it was last time I checked.

Here’s a brilliantly catchy tune to see all of you, and me, into the weekend.

This is Grimes aka Claire Boucher in her video ‘Oblivion’, directed by Emily Kai Bock.

Chromatics is back from the grave

We’ve had Chromatics on heavy rotation on our iPod this year. Just check out the ice-cool and dreamy video ‘Candy’ featuring singer Ruth Radelet reading Helmut Newton’s Pages From The Glossies book.

Chromatics is a dark dance-pop outfit out of Portland, Oregon. In fact, Glass Candy fans will recognise Chromatics for its multi-instrumentalist producer Johnny Jewel plays in both bands.

Ruth, guitarist Adam Miller, drummer Nat Walker and the aforementioned multitasking musician somewhat disappeared after their successful 2007 album Night Drive but resurrected at the end of the last year with a score ‘Tick Of The Clock’ featured in Nicolas Winding Refn’s movie Drive. The song was not a big hit, but we recognised (loved and missed) the melancholic and nostalgic mood of Chromatics’s music.

The band is known for their understanding of the fashion language and their beautiful aesthetics in their music videos directed by Alberto Rossini. Alberto is always on the money and perfectly translates the hazy atmosphere of the sound into visual deliciousness.

Their fifth single ‘Back From The Grave’ off ‘Kill For Love’ is a great dancefloor heater.

2:54 is the magic number

Every now and then a band comes out of nowhere whose sound makes you stop dead in your tracks. In truth, ‘nowhere’ isn’t an accurate description of this band. 2:54 consists of sisters Colette and Hannah Thurlow – Colette and I met in a previous life when both of us worked on the same style magazine. After their first band ran its course, the girls formed 2:54.

Recalling a conversation Colette and I had about the band’s name, she explained that it’s always at the 2 minute and 54 second point into a track where a song is at its most interesting. Her sister agreed, and from there, the band was born.

Presently, they are hard at work on an album due to be launched later this year.
